This academy was built to commemorate the loyalty of Gwak Jae-u (1552-1617), who served as a righteous-army leader during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. When the war broke out, Gwak Jae-u organised a righteous army and won great merit fighting across the Gyeongsang-do region, and he became widely known as the "Red Robe General" for the red garments he wore. It was first established in 1618, the tenth year of King Gwanghaegun, as Chunghyeonsa Shrine, and was enlarged into the form of a Confucian academy in 1674, the fifteenth year of King Hyeonjong. In 1677, the third year of King Sukjong, it received royal recognition as a state-chartered academy and was given the name "Yeyeon". It was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, and was completely destroyed during the Korean War; it was restored between 1977 and 1984. Today it additionally enshrines the spirit tablet of Gwak Jun, a second cousin of Gwak Jae-u's father who distinguished himself during the second Japanese invasion of 1597. The precinct's buildings include a shrine and a lecture hall as the main structures, along with a gosa, a building used to prepare ritual offerings, and east and west quarters used as lodgings. The shrine houses the spirit tablets of Gwak Jae-u and Gwak Jun. The lecture hall, used as a meeting place and place of instruction for Confucian scholars, has a wooden-floored hall at its centre flanked by ondol, heated-floor rooms, on either side. Memorial rites are held every year in March and September. Within the precinct stands an intriguing stone monument said to sweat whenever the nation faces hardship.
