Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIksan Mireuksanseong Fortress, on Mireuksan Mountain in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, is also known as Yonghwasanseong Fortress, because in the past Mireuksan was called Yonghwasan. It is also called Gijunseong, after a tradition that King Gijun of Gojoseon came south and built it here; but since one of the Mahan states is thought to have held power centred on this area, the fortress is presumed to have been built at that time. When King Taejo of Goryeo pursued Sin Geom and Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje, he subjugated them and received Sin Geom's surrender at Maseong, which is said to be this very fortress. The fortress has a perimeter of about 1,287 m and a height of 2.4 m. From the summit, walls run along the ridgelines in every direction, one of them descending toward a watercourse, where the east gate is presumed to have stood. Small subsidiary walls were built separately at the gates to strengthen the defences, and stone arrowheads, sling stones and other relics have been found inside the fortress.
