Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is Iksan Nangsansanseong Fortress, on the summit of Nangsan Mountain (162m above sea level) in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do. It is also known as Guseong or Mahanseong ("Mahan Fortress"); the name Mahanseong comes from a legend that King Jun of Gojoseon came south to this area and built it. However, no relics related to the Mahan period have yet been found here, so there is no evidence that it was actually built during the Mahan period. Only relics dating from the Baekje period onward have been found inside the fortress, suggesting that it was built at that time, and it is presumed that it came to be called Mahanseong in later ages because the Iksan area was regarded as the old capital of Mahan. The fortress encircles the summit, with its northern section running close to the peak itself and its southern section enclosing part of a valley. The wall surviving on the south side is now about 2.8m high, and two points where water flows have been identified. Traces of gates also remain on the south, east and west sides, and stones that appear to be foundation stones are scattered across the south-eastern part of the fortress, indicating the site of a building, though its exact scale is unknown.
