Beopwasa Temple flourished on Jeju Island from the 12th to the 15th century. In the early 18th century, when Yi Hyeong-sang, magistrate of Jeju-mok, burned down three temples on Jeju Island, it was completely destroyed by fire, and the present buildings were rebuilt in 1987. On the site of the current main hall, the foundation of what appears to be the geumdang (the main hall enshrining the Buddha) was discovered, showing that it was a large building, five bays wide and four bays deep, with a floor area of about 100 pyeong (approximately 330 square metres). The base stones of the building's platform were laid in two tiers, and the technique used for its facing stones is distinctive; judging from the pottery and roof-tile fragments excavated there, the building is thought to have been constructed sometime between the 10th and 12th centuries. At the time it was a very large temple, and it is an important site as one of the three great temples of Jeju Island.
