A bongsudae, or beacon station, was a traditional means of communication using fire and smoke to convey urgent news: a fire was lit atop a high mountain, sending signals by smoke in daytime and by firelight at night. The Donghae Eodalsan Mountain Beacon Station, on the summit of Eodalsan Mountain in Daejin-dong, Donghae, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, preserves the remains of a circular beacon mound 9 m in diameter and 2 m high. It was built during the Goryeo period as a defence against invasions by the Jurchen, and continued in use through the Joseon period. One fire was lit in normal times, two when the enemy appeared, three when the enemy approached the border, four when the border was breached, and five when enemy and friendly forces engaged in battle at the border. The Eodalsan beacon station relayed information southward to the Gwangjinsan beacon station in Samcheok and northward to the Ogeunsan beacon station in Gangneung.
