This is the site of Mujingo Fortress, on Mudeungsan Mountain in Buk-gu, Gwangju, built in an oval shape centred on Jangwonbong Peak, a northern ridge of Mudeungsan Mountain, and following the line of Jangdaebong Peak at Jatgogae pass and the mountain ridge inside the No. 4 Reservoir. The wall was built by stacking about five courses of stone at the base and filling the wall above with rubble. It runs 1,000m from north to south and about 500m from east to west, with a total circumference of 3,500m, making it a large fortress. Inside the fortress, roof-tile fragments inscribed with characters such as "Gwan" ("office") and "Gukseong" ("national fortress") have been found, along with eave-end tiles decorated with birds and goblin faces, and fragments of plain celadon and inlaid celadon. In particular, a round eave-tile bearing a bird design, found at a building site on the upper level south of Jatgogae, is notable for a distinctive bird pattern not seen elsewhere. Based on the excavated relics, the fortress is presumed to have been in use from the late Unified Silla period to the early Goryeo period.
