Iksan Baekje Earthenware Island Kiln Site
익산백제토기도요지 · 益山百濟土器陶窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA yoji, or kiln site, refers to a place where kilns were built for firing porcelain, roof tiles and other vessels. The Iksan Baekje earthenware kiln site lies on the eastern side of Mireuksan Mountain, where two kilns have been excavated. The kilns were found to be semi-underground climbing kilns (deungyo), a tunnel-type kiln with a semicircular ceiling that slopes upward. Wide-mouthed jars (gwanggu-ho), tripod earthenware vessels (samjok toki) and jars were unearthed here. This kiln site provides valuable evidence of the shape of Baekje earthenware from the late Baekje period, and its structure closely resembles that of sixth-century kilns found in Osaka, Japan, making it an important site demonstrating that Japanese pottery-making techniques originated from Baekje.
