Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA beacon station (bongsudae) was a traditional means of communication that relayed urgent news by torch fire and smoke. Watchmen climbed a high mountain and lit fires, sending signals by smoke in the daytime and by firelight at night. Joseon-period records note that a station stood on the western peak of the ridge running north from the main summit of Achasan Mountain, and this has confirmed the present site as that of the Achasan Mountain beacon station. It was the point from which messages relayed from Gyeongheung in Hamgyong Province, by way of Gangwon Province, were finally reported on to Namsan Mountain. Only the bare site had survived, until in 1994 a replica was installed as part of a project marking 600 years since Seoul became the capital.
