Bongmu-dong Tumuli
봉무동고분군 · 鳳舞洞古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Bongmu-dong Tumuli are distributed on a hill adjoining the south-east of the Yeongsin School site in Bongmu-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu. The hill where the Bongmu-dong tombs are concentrated stands opposite, to the north, the Bullo-dong Tumuli, Historic Site No. 262, across the Gyeongbu Expressway (a narrow mountain lowland); together with the Bullo-dong Tumuli, the site is important evidence for the burial customs and cultural change of the local population during the tumulus period and afterwards. During grading work on the Yeongsin School site in 2003, five small earthen-mound tombs, seven stone-lined tombs, four Goryeo-period stone-lined tombs and one pit tomb were excavated at the lower part of the hill corresponding to the northern end of the Bongmu-dong Tumuli. The earthen-mound tombs have a side-entrance stone-chamber structure: the four walls of the main chamber were built by stacking two or three large slab stones at the base and laying smaller broken stones flat above, and the entrance of the side passage was closed by standing slab stones at the edges and packing thin broken stones inside. This type of structure is not found anywhere else in the Daegu area outside Bongmu-dong. The stone-lined tombs are of vertical-pit type, built by laying broken stones flat, with the floor divided by a stone partition wall between the space for laying out the body and the space for grave goods. This partition structure is also seen at the Bullo-dong Tumuli and in small stone-lined tombs there, reflecting a shared affinity between the local groups of Bullo-dong and Bongmu-dong. The tombs have generally been dated to the fifth and sixth centuries. The Bongmu-dong Tumuli are concentrated on an oval hill measuring 600m east to west and 300m north to south. Based on the visible surface distribution alone, about 132 tombs have been identified.
