This house is said to have been built in the 1920s by the American missionary Robert M. Willson (known in Korean as U Il-seon), and it is the oldest Western-style house remaining in Gwangju. In 1908 Willson became director of Jejungwon (now the Christian Hospital) and carried out missionary work there as a doctor. The building has a square floor plan: the first floor holds a living room, a family room, a utility room, a kitchen and a bathroom; bedrooms are on the second floor; and the basement contains a storeroom and a boiler room.
