Namwon Geumnamjae Hall
남원금남재 · 南原錦南齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a jaesil, a memorial hall for ancestral rites, built by Geumnam O Eung (1422–1470), a civil official of early Joseon, near his grandfather's grave. The exact date of construction is unknown, but it came to be called Geumnamjae after O Eung's pen name, Geumnam. O Eung served as governor of four provinces, and his grandfather, O Sang-deok, was the brother-in-law of State Councillor Hwang Hui. Because of this connection, the family held joint memorial rites for both ancestors at Punggye Seowon in Daegang-myeon, where Hwang Hui is enshrined, but the O clan later judged that they could not go on having their own ancestor honoured within another family's shrine, so they built Sulsansa beside Geumnamjae to hold separate rites. Standing on a stone platform 1m high, the building has a matbae, or gabled, roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when seen from the side. Three-bay wings are attached to either side of the single-bay main hall, giving the whole structure a ㄷ-shaped, or U-shaped, layout.
