Ansandongsanseong Fortress
안산동산성 · 案山洞山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress was built on the summit of Gojosan Mountain, 226 metres above sea level, on the boundary between Ansan-dong in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, and Banpo-myeon in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province. It encircles the mountain peak and measures about 600 to 800 metres in circumference; part of a communication trench survives inside the wall. The wall follows the contours of the terrain and is built up in three stepped tiers, so that it looks like a triple fortress wall, a form commonly found in fortresses built during the Baekje period. Only a small stretch of the wall survives today: the inner wall stands 1.1 m high and the outer wall 6.3 m high. At the centre of the fortress is a circular stone structure thought to be the site of a storehouse, with a passage running north from it. Because the fortress commands a clear view of the road between Daejeon and Jochiwon, it occupies a key point on a major transport route and is regarded as an important mountain fortress; in particular, it is presumed to have been a military stronghold that worked together with the nearby Jeogosanseong and Guosanseong fortresses.
