Damyang O Chung Memorial Gate
담양오충정려 · 潭陽五忠旌閭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis memorial gate was erected by the state to honour the loyalty of Park Cheon-bung (1545–1592), who died fighting in the Imjin War, and his four sons, Wongyeom, Ingyeom, Ryegyeom and Uigyeom, who carried on their late father's cause and died in active service during the Manchu invasion of 1636 (the Byeongja War). Park Cheon-bung served as a staff officer under Jo Heon, who led righteous-army forces in the Imjin War, and was killed in the Battle of Cheongju, where he fought alongside the monk-soldier Yeonggyu. Built in 1748, the 24th year of King Yeongjo, this memorial hall measures three bays across the front and one bay deep, and houses two steles, an old one and a new one. The old stele was set up again when the building, destroyed by fire in 1886, the 23rd year of Emperor Gojong, was rebuilt; its front bore the inscription 'Stele Recording the Five Loyal Sons of the Miryang Park Clan', written in the haeseo (standard) script, and its back originally carried an account of the memorial honours, but this was defaced by the Japanese police in 1938 and nothing of it now remains. The other stele records the circumstances of the five men's loyal deaths.
