Honinji is a small pond where the three divine progenitors of Tamna (present-day Jeju) — Go, Yang, and Bu — are each said to have married one of three princesses from the kingdom of Byeongnang, who had drifted ashore in a wooden box at what is now the seaside village of Onpyeong-ri. The three progenitors had lived by hunting, wearing animal skins and eating meat, but after raising the calf and foal found inside the wooden box and sowing the seeds of the five grains, they came to enjoy a settled, peaceful life, and it is said that farming began from this time. The shore where the wooden box was found is called Hwangnu-al, where the footprints left by the three princesses on the rocks are said still to remain.
