The Guyong Landscape Wi Observatory was the first self-recording observatory built along the Hangang River, and the ninth built nationwide, established to observe tidal levels and flood levels. Even before the observatory was built, ordinary water-level observation had been carried out at the same location from 1917 under the gauge name "Guyongsan"; but with the construction of the Guyong Landscape Wi Observatory in December 1924 and the official start of observation in January 1925, more scientific and modern water-level observation became possible. The observatory was closed in 1977 owing to changes in tidal levels, although actual water-level observation had continued until September 1976. Observation does appear to have been briefly suspended, however, during the period of political turmoil brought on by the Korean War after Korea's liberation in 1945. The observatory survives largely in its original form. As a free-standing structure built for measuring water level, it is the only one of its kind remaining along the Hangang River in Seoul, and appears to be a rare surviving example nationwide.
