Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJuheulsan Mountain, in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, stands at the main axis of the Sobaek Mountains and, together with the surrounding peaks, forms a rugged range. Here lies Joryeonggwanmun Gate (Historic Site No. 147), one of the main routes by which people in Yeongnam crossed the steep passes of the Sobaek Mountains to reach Hanyang during the Joseon dynasty. The gate complex consists of three checkpoints: Juheulgwan, the first gate of Yeongnam; Jogokgwan, the second gate; and Joryeonggwan, the third gate. Because of its military importance, Jogokgwan was rebuilt in the 34th year of King Sukjong (1708), and the fortresses of Chogokseong and Joryeong Sanseong were built at Juheulgwan. Around the gate complex are the site of Joryeongwon, an inn that once lodged travelling officials, and Hyeguksa Temple, founded in the 8th year of King Munseong of Silla (846). In the valley of the Joryeongcheon stream, Yeogung Falls and Ssangnyong Falls form a striking natural landscape amid the surrounding trees.
