Busan Garrison Fort Seomun Gate Fortress Wall Ujuseok
부산진성 서문성곽우주석 · 釜山鎭城 西門城廓隅柱石

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe West Gate fortress-wall gateposts (ujuseok, paired stone posts flanking a gate) of Busan Garrison Fort originally stood in the grounds of Seongnam Elementary School, near the fort's West Gate. In 1975, when the city of Busan carried out a restoration project for Busan Garrison Fort and rebuilt Geumnugwan, the fort's West Gate, the two gateposts were relocated and restored together with it. The right-hand stone pillar bears the inscription "Namyoinhu" (南徼咽喉), meaning "This place is the southern border, corresponding to the throat of the nation." The left-hand stone pillar bears the inscription "Seomunswaeyak" (西門鎖鑰), meaning "The West Gate is like the lock of the nation." These inscriptions are relics reflecting the vigilance of the age against Japanese invasion following the Imjin War, and they are a heritage that underscores how vital Busanjin was as a region for national defence. The left-hand stone pillar of the West Gate fortress-wall gateposts is 272 cm high and 46–49 cm wide, and the right-hand pillar is 277 cm high and 62–71 cm wide.
