Chuncheon Jungdojeokseokchong Tomb
춘천중도적석총 · 春川中島積石塚

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a tomb of the Proto-Three Kingdoms period on Jungdo, an island in the middle of Lake Uiam in Chuncheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Jungdo has long offered geographical conditions favourable to settlement, and prehistoric dwelling sites and tombs remain there. Of the two stone mound tombs (jeokseokchong) at the southern tip of the island, one was excavated in 1981. It measures 15 m along each of its four sides and 4 m in height, its walls built of river stones. Inside, sand and earth were spread in a thin layer, with a burial chamber built of river stones at the centre; stones were then piled up again over and around the chamber. A large quantity of pottery fragments was recovered from inside the tomb, along with bronze earrings, a small iron sword, iron arrowheads and other ironware. Comparison of the pottery fragments from the tomb with those from nearby dwelling sites suggests that the tomb's occupant was a local ruler active in the second to third century. The stone mound tombs of Jungdo are important remains showing that the Chuncheon area, as a central point along the Bukhangang (North Han) River, formed a distinctive cultural sphere during the Proto-Three Kingdoms period.
