This mountain fortress stands atop Daeguksan Mountain in Jinmok-ri, Seolcheon-myeon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, its stone wall encircling the summit. The fortress has a circumference of 1.5 km; the walls are 5–6 m high and 2.4 m wide at the top. The outer face was built up in layers of broken stone, while the interior was packed and compacted with gravel and earth. Traces survive around the wall of square watchtowers, raised platforms built to observe enemy movements. At the centre of the fortress are the remains of a building site and a pond, together with a ritual site associated with a legend involving a general surnamed Cheon and his seven maidservants. Gates appear to have stood at the south-east and north of the fortress, the south-eastern gate being presumed to have been the main entrance. The Dongguk yeoji seungnam records that "Gohyeon Fortress lies 17 ri north of the county town; it is built of stone, with a circumference of 1,740 cheok (527 m) and a height of 10 cheok (3 m)," and Gohyeon Fortress is considered to be the same site as Daeguksanseong Fortress. It is not known exactly when it was built, but Daeguksanseong Fortress is thought to have been the town fortress guarding the old Namhae county seat nearby. Various pieces of earthenware and roof tile have been found within the fortress, and its very good state of preservation makes it an important resource for scholarly research.
