Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGanghwa Jeonseong is a brick-built section of the Ganghwa Outer Wall, which was originally raised to defend the coastline after King Gojong of Goryeo moved the capital to Ganghwado Island in 1232 in the face of the Mongol invasions; the outer wall ran for about 23 km from Jeokbuk Battery to Chojijin. This particular stretch was rebuilt in brick during the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon. The Ganghwa Outer Wall was repaired on several occasions from the reign of King Gwanghaegun through to that of King Sukjong. In particular, under King Yeongjo, on the recommendation of the Ganghwa commissioner (yusu) Kim Si-hyeok, the section of the outer wall around Odu Battery was rebuilt in brick between 1742 and 1744 (the eighteenth to twentieth years of King Yeongjo). This wall is known as Ganghwa Jeonseong, or "brick-built wall." Traces of the brick wall built at that time can still be seen around Odu Battery, and a section south of Odu Battery has been restored in modern times. Together with Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon (a Historic Site), Ganghwa Jeonseong provides valuable material for the study of brick-built fortifications.
