Ugeumsanseong Fortress
우금산성 · 禹金山城

Ugeumsanseong Fortress is a stone-walled mountain fortress on the hill behind Gaeamsa Temple in Gamgyo-ri, Sangseo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. The wall was built along the ridges running down from Ugeumbawi Rock to the reservoir of Gaeamsa Temple; a south gate was set at the mouth of the valley leading south, and the wall extends east and west along both ridgelines. Built with a mix of dressed and natural stones, the wall ran 563 m to the south and 675 m to the west from Ugeumbawi Rock, and together with the east and north sections the total length of the wall reached 3,960 m. In 660, the 20th year of King Uija's reign, Baekje surrendered to the allied forces of Silla and Tang. General Boksin and others then welcomed back Prince Pung, who had been living in Japan, proclaimed him king, and rallied the people into a righteous army. This was the place where General Boksin fought fiercely against Kim Yu-sin and Su Dingfang of the allied Silla-Tang forces but was ultimately defeated; it was the last stronghold of Baekje's unrelenting campaign to restore the kingdom. Encircling the Daeungjeon Hall of Gaeamsa Temple as if wrapped around it, Ugeumsanseong Fortress is now popular as a historical-travel course for those tracing Baekje culture.
