Im Garrison Fort is also known as "Minboseong", meaning a fortress built jointly by the military, officials and civilians to defend against Japanese raiders during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598). It is a small stone hill fortress, some 286 m in circumference, built on a low hill extending north from Pyeongsanpo on Namhaedo Island. Gates were set into the east and west walls, though today only the site of the east gate survives. Inside the fortress is a well site, and traces remain of a moat that once diverted water around the outside of the wall. It is said that the fortress once also had a watchtower, quarters for training soldiers, a lookout post, and a village school. In the early Joseon period, officials were dispatched to guard the fortress against expected raids by Japanese pirates, but from the mid-16th century onward it was used by local residents as a refuge in times of emergency. The 173 m stretch of surviving wall between the east gate site and west gate site on the south side has recently undergone repair work.
