Asan Gongsegotgoji Site
아산공세곶고지 · 牙山貢稅串庫址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the granaries where grain was stored during the Joseon dynasty before being transported onward; its original name was Gongjinchang. In 1478, the ninth year of King Seongjong, once all institutions had been reorganised under the Gyeongguk daejeon (National Code), grain collected as tax throughout Chungcheong-do was gathered entirely at this site before being shipped, at fixed times, to the granaries of Seoul. Today about 680 m of the fortified enclosure (seongji) built around the site of the granary remains, though it is only just possible to make out the former layout from it. At first there were no storehouses and the grain was simply piled up in the open, but in 1523, the 18th year of King Jungjong, 80 kan (bays) of storehouses were finally built. Here, rice paid as tax by the 39 mok, gun and hyeon (administrative districts) of Chungcheong-do was gathered and shipped by boat to the capital.
