Ryusunjeong Pavilion Ryuhongbuja Burial Ground
류순정·류홍부자묘역 · 柳順汀·柳泓父子墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Ryusunjeong Pavilion Ryuhongbuja Burial Ground is the only father-and-son burial ground of two generations of meritorious subjects (gongsin, officials honoured for distinguished service) in the Seoul area, and its creation in the first half of the 16th century is unusually early for such a site. The burial ground was established when Ryu Sun-jeong, a meritorious subject of the 1506 restoration that placed King Jungjong on the throne and who held the post of Chief State Councillor, died in 1512, the seventh year of King Jungjong, at the age of 53. Following the precedent set at the death of Bak Won-jong, King Jungjong suspended court proceedings for three days and granted a coffin and outer coffin from Jangsaengjeon, the royal storehouse that kept coffins ready for the royal family. At the same time he bestowed on the family about three million pyeong (a traditional unit of land area, roughly 3.3 m² each) of land, stretching from present-day Oryu-dong and Onsu-dong in Guro-gu to Yeowol-dong and Jak-dong in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. In later generations, however, the burial ground was gradually reduced, resulting in its present scale and layout.
