A dondae is a watch post built on high, open ground with good visibility along a border or coastal area, for observing enemy movements and preparing against attack; it typically had a tall outer wall built up like a fortress, with a lower inner floor on which cannon were mounted. Standing on a hill southwest of Mangwol Plain, Gyeryong Battery retains an inscription on the side of its outer wall, and, together with Mangwol Battery, it was a battery managed directly by the local government office. According to this surviving inscription, it was built in 1679, the 5th year of King Sukjong of Joseon; a record of a battery's exact date of construction surviving in this way is a rare example.
