Baekgolsanseong Fortress
백골산성 · 白骨山城

Baekgolsanseong Fortress was built using the rugged terrain of the summit of Baekgolsan Mountain, 340 m above sea level, in Sinha-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, and has a circumference of 400 m. The fortress encircles the summit of the mountain, a form known as a teomoe-sik sanseong (a mountain fortress built around a hilltop). Because the walls were built on steep terrain, much of them has completely collapsed, making the original appearance difficult to make out. To the west of Baekgolsanseong lies Gyejoksanseong Fortress, a strategic stronghold of Baekje, while to the east it borders the famous Gwansanseong Fortress of Silla, showing that it served as a sentry post guarding the only route by which Baekje forces entered Silla territory. Today the artificial lake of Daecheongho occupies the area in plain view, but at the time the fortress was built, the Geumgang River flowed facing Silla, and it can be inferred that this was an important strategic point guarding both the land and water routes.
