Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHyangsan-ri Dolmen is located opposite Hambakdeul in Hyangsan-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, and is one of the largest dolmens remaining in the Sangbuk-myeon area, in good condition of preservation. The capstone that survives today measures approximately 310 cm in length, 300 cm in width and 90 cm in thickness. Villagers call it "General Rock" (Janggun Bawi), saying that General Jeong Dae-eop practised martial arts on it during the Joseon period, and it is also called "Chilseong Bawi" (Seven Stars Rock), because seven cup-marks (seonghyeol) remain on top of the capstone. The cup-marks found on capstones are sometimes interpreted as symbols of the female genitalia, signifying fertility and abundant childbirth, and are sometimes seen as representing the sun. A widespread story tells that women unable to bear children would rub a small stone vigorously into the cup-marks, and if the stone stuck to the rock, they would bear a son. This dolmen is valued as important material for studying the society, politics and culture of the Bronze Age in the Sangbuk area.
