This building was erected by Nam Ji-eon, renowned as a filial son during the Joseon dynasty, so that he could teach his students, and was named Samgoedang after his pen name. His father, Nam In, and his son, Nam Gyeong, were likewise noted for their filial devotion, and the state is said to have built a Samhyogak (Shrine of the Three Filial Sons) in their honour, but this has since been lost and no longer survives. The present Samgoedang building was rebuilt in 1802, the 25th year of King Sunjo, with a hipped-and-gabled roof (paljakjibung) that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side.
