This is a historic site associated with Yu Hyeong-won (pen name Bangye, 1622-1673), a pioneer of Silhak, or Practical Learning, during the reigns of King Hyojong and King Hyeonjong of Joseon. He sat the state examination twice in 1648 but failed both times, and after moving here in 1653, the fourth year of King Hyojong, he lived the rest of his life in seclusion. Though repeatedly offered official posts in recognition of his outstanding scholarship, he declined them all and devoted his entire life to study until his death. It was here that he completed the 26-volume Bangyesurok. His scholarship had a far-reaching influence: in his principal work, the Bangyesurok, he set out various proposals for enriching rural communities and improving the people's livelihood, which greatly influenced later Silhak scholars such as Jeong Yak-yong.
