Jeongnyeo refers to a stone monument or gate that the state erected at the entrance to a town to honour loyal subjects, filial children, or virtuous women. This one was built to honour virtuous women. This pavilion was erected in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, to honour nine wives of the Dongnae Jeong and Jinju Jeong clans who, having taken refuge in Yeonggwang County during the Jeongyu War of 1597 — the second Japanese invasion, in the thirtieth year of King Seonjo — threw themselves into the sea off Chilsan when pursued by Japanese troops, so as to preserve their chastity. At first, a jeongnyeo honouring eight of the women was erected in Hampyeong, while that of Lady Park of Miryang, wife of Jeong Deung, was built separately in her hometown of Yeonggwang County. However, both were destroyed during the Korean War, and their descendants rebuilt them at the present site in 1960.
