Gyo-dong Walled Town
교동읍성 · 喬桐邑城

Eupseong refers to a walled town built to protect the residents of a county or district while serving both military and administrative functions. Gyo-dong Walled Town, in Gyo-dong-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, enclosed an entire settlement to keep out incursions from outside, with gates set at intervals to allow passage to and from beyond the walls. The wall runs about 430m in circumference and stands about 6m high, with gates on three sides — east, south and north — each surmounted by a gate tower (munnu) used for keeping watch: the east gate was called Tongsamnu, the south gate Yuryangnu, and the north gate Gongbungnu. The wall was first built in 1629, the seventh year of King Injo of Joseon, rebuilt in 1753, the 29th year of King Yeongjo, and the gates are recorded as having been rebuilt again in 1884, the 21st year of Emperor Gojong. It is also recorded that the east and north gates were rebuilt once more in 1890, the 27th year of Emperor Gojong, but none of the three gates survives today. It is not known exactly when the east and north gates were lost, while the south gate, Yuryangnu, collapsed in a storm in 1921, leaving only its half-moon-shaped arched gateway (hongyemun) standing.
