Somunsanseong Fortress

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSomunsanseong Fortress stands on the summit, 200m above sea level, north of Sokgol village in Sin-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, with walls measuring 350m in circumference. The fortress encloses the top of the mountain, a form known as a temoesik fortress, a style of mountain fortress built to enclose a hill summit. The mountain is almost entirely flat-topped, and the fortress's layout is nearly circular. Relatively small among temoesik fortresses, it has a flat strip of ground, 5–10m wide, running along the inside of the wall, and the outer height of the wall is estimated at around 5m. Where the eastern and southern walls have collapsed, it can be seen that beneath one to four courses of stonework lies plain earth, showing that the wall was originally built of packed earth and only faced with stone in a later period. A south gate site 4m wide and an east gate site 3m wide survive; almost no building sites can be found inside the fortress, apart from a single well site 3m in diameter near the eastern wall.
