Choe Yeong Jang Gun Tomb
최영장군묘 · 崔瑩將軍墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of General Choe Yeong (崔瑩, 1316–1388), a great general of the late Goryeo period who was executed while trying to defend Goryeo. He played a crucial role in steadying Goryeo's faltering fortunes, suppressing the Red Turban rebels and repelling dozens of invasions by Japanese pirates (waegu). When Ming China attempted to seize the territory north of Cheollyeong, he drew up a plan to conquer Liaodong and advanced as far as the Amnok (Yalu) River, but his aim was thwarted when Yi Seong-gye turned his troops back at Wihwado Island, and in 1388 (the 14th year of King U) he was executed by the rising faction led by Yi Seong-gye and his followers. The tomb precinct is a joint burial with his wife of the Yu clan of Munhwa, formed as a single mound. The original form of the burial has been altered, but the stone furnishings are a mixture of old and new. The mound takes the rectangular shape typical of the late Goryeo period, and a two-tiered stone border was built around its lower part to protect it. To the front left of the mound stands a myopyo (a stone tablet inscribed with the name of the tomb's occupant), and to the front right stands the Mumin-gong Loyal Spirit Stele. In front of the mound are a spirit-repose stone, an offering table, an incense-burner stone, and stone civil-official figures, all of which were newly added in the 1970s. This tomb precinct retains some features of Goryeo-period burial practice and is of academic value.
