This is the site where Jeon U (1841–1922), a Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period, pursued his scholarly studies. He studied for twenty years under Im Heon-hoe, and in 1882, the 19th year of Emperor Gojong, he took up official office but soon resigned to devote himself wholly to scholarship. When national sovereignty was seized by Japan in 1910, at the start of the Japanese colonial period, he was filled with indignation and withdrew to his home region, where he sought to restore national sovereignty through Confucian learning (dohak). He was nonetheless criticised in some quarters for speaking only of Confucian learning rather than raising a righteous army (uibyeong). Until 1922 he taught Confucian learning at this site, devoting his life to fostering the national spirit by encouraging anti-Japanese sentiment. Jeon U's achievements in Neo-Confucian scholarship are highly regarded, and because he sought to put traditional Confucian thought into practice exactly as it stood, he is revered as the last orthodox Confucian scholar of the Joseon dynasty.
