This is the site where nine wives of the Dongnae Jeong and Jinju Jeong clans, who lived in Wolya-myeon, Hampyeong County, fled to Mukbangpo in Yeonggwang County to escape Japanese invaders during the Jeongyu War of 1597 (the second Japanese invasion of Korea). When they encountered Japanese troops there, they resolved to die righteously, and all nine threw themselves into the sea, dying in fidelity. To commemorate the nine wives who preserved their chastity through death, a memorial stele was erected on this site in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong.
