A yeondae is a beacon-signal station that used smoke and fire to relay urgent political and military news. It differed little in function from a bongsudae, a mountain-top beacon station, but a yeondae was usually built on a hill or along the coast, sending signals by smoke during the day and by torch fire at night. Maldeungpo Yeondae is one of thirty-eight such beacon stations on Jeju Island, and is notable for retaining its original form particularly well. Each corner is built up with large slabs of stone, a method distinctive to Jeju Island, and the station stands 3.6 m high. It belonged to Jeongui-hyeon county and relayed signals eastward with Hyeopja Yeondae and westward with Cheonmi Yeondae; it is said to have been guarded in rotation by six byeoljang, junior officers, and twelve bonggun, beacon soldiers, assigned from Jeongui-hyeon.
