A yeondae was an old military communication facility that, in the event of an enemy invasion or other emergency, sent smoke signals by day and torch signals by night to quickly alert nearby villages or army garrisons. It differs from a bongsudae (beacon mound) in that a yeondae was built on high ground close to the coast, whereas a bongsudae was sited on a mountain summit. Hyeopjayeondae, which belonged to Susanjin garrison, sits in a place of outstanding scenery, with coastal cliffs, the blue sea, and Seondol Rock nearby. This yeondae retains its old appearance well, and the site of a hearth remains on top of it. Standing 3.1m high, it communicated with Osopo Yeondae and Seongsanpo Yeondae to the north, and with Maldeungpo Yeondae to the west.
