A yeondae was a means of communication that used torches and smoke to relay urgent political and military news. It functioned no differently from a bongsudae, a signal-fire beacon mound, except that a yeondae was generally built on a hill or by the coast, whereas a bongsudae was set on a mountain peak, sending signals by smoke during the day and by fire at night. Cheonmiyeondae belonged to Jeongui-hyeon and now stands within the fence of a private house; it is 3.6 m high. It is said to have relayed signals with Maldeungpo Yeondae to the east and Somaro Yeondae to the west. Six byeoljang (deputy officers) and twelve bonggun (beacon-tower guards) were stationed here, keeping watch in rotating shifts.
