A yeondae was an old military communication facility that used smoke by day and torches by night to quickly relay news of enemy incursions or other emergencies to nearby villages or army posts. It differed from a bongsudae, a beacon-fire station, in being sited on high ground close to the shore, whereas a bongsudae stood on a mountain summit. Namduyeondae Pavilion, which belonged to the Aewol garrison, stands beside the coastal road at Sinuem-ri. It measures 6.3m by 6.4m at the top and 7.9m by 7.6m at the base, with a height of 3.9m, and its position atop a seaside cliff gives it a beautiful setting. This station is said to have exchanged signals with Jobu Yeondae to the east and Aewol Yeondae to the west.
