A yeondae was a means of communication that used torch fire and smoke to convey urgent political and military news. It served the same function as a bongsudae (beacon mound), but while yeondae were usually built on hills or coastal areas, bongsudae were set up on mountain peaks, sending signals by smoke in the daytime and by torch fire at night. Belonging to Seogwijin garrison in Jeongui-hyeon, Jeju-mok, Yeondongyeondae sits on a ridge top 100 m north of the coast at Seoho-dong, Seogwipo. Many of its stones have collapsed, and it now stands 2.4 m high. Using torch fire and smoke, one signal was raised in normal times, two when a suspicious ship appeared, three when it approached close to land, four when it invaded the land, and five when battle began. Yeondongyeondae faces Beomseong and could observe as far as Munseom and Sseogeunseom; it exchanged signals with Sammaeyangbongsu to the east and Byeonsuyeondae to the west.
