A yeondae is a beacon station using bonfires and smoke, a means of communication used to convey urgent political and military news. It served the same function as a bongsudae (mountain-top beacon station), differing mainly in siting: a yeondae was usually built on a hill or in a coastal area, whereas a bongsudae was set on a mountain summit, sending signals by smoke during the day and by fire at night. Belonging to Jocheonjin, the Waepo Yeondae stands at Gwankotdeul, west of Sinheung-ri, Jocheon-eup, Bukjeju-gun, Jeju, and is also called the Gopo Yeondae. Built in an oval shape, it was manned in round-the-clock relays by six generals and twelve beacon-keepers assigned from Jocheonjin, and it exchanged signals with the Hamdeok Yeondae to the east and the Jocheon Yeondae to the west.
