A yeondae was a means of communication using torch fires and smoke to convey urgent political and military news. It served the same function as a bongsudae, a beacon mound, but while a yeondae was usually built on a hill or along the coast, a bongsudae stood on a mountain peak, sending signals by smoke during the day and by torch fire at night. Hamdeogyeondae Pavilion, which belonged to Jocheonjin garrison, stands within the Jeju National University Marine Research Institute, west of Hamdeok-ri, Jocheon-eup, in what was Bukjeju-gun. It is now considerably damaged, and only its lower section survives, measuring about 7.9 m by 8.1 m and 1.6–2.4 m in height. Six officers and twelve beacon-keepers from Jocheonjin were stationed here, guarding it in shifts around the clock. It exchanged signals eastward, via Seosan Beacon Mound, with Muju Beacon Station, and westward with Waepo Beacon Station.
