A yeondae was a means of communication using bonfires and smoke to relay urgent political and military news. It functioned in the same way as a bongsudae (a beacon-fire station) but differed in location: a yeondae was usually built on a hill or along the coast, whereas a bongsudae stood on a mountain summit, sending signals by smoke during the day and by fire at night. Jwagayeondae, under the jurisdiction of Byeolbang-jin garrison, stands north of Handong-ri in Gujwa-eup, formerly part of Bukjeju-gun, at a site once known as Jwagajang. Its south and west sides have now collapsed, but the outline of the station remains clear, and it survives to a height of 1.8 to 2.2 metres. Six janggun (officers) and twelve bongsugun (beacon guards) of Byeolbang-jin garrison manned it around the clock in rotation, exchanging signals with Ipdu Yeondae to the east and Muju Yeondae to the west.
