A yeondae was a means of communication that used torches and smoke to relay urgent political and military news. It functioned no differently from a bongsudae, a signal-fire beacon mound, except that a yeondae was generally built on a hill or by the coast, whereas a bongsudae was set on a mountain peak, sending signals by smoke during the day and by fire at night. Jongdalyeondae, which belonged to Susanjin, the local garrison, stands beside the coastal road northeast of Jimibong Peak in Jongdal-ri, Gujwa-eup, formerly part of Bukjeju-gun (North Jeju County). Today it is overgrown with pine forest, and only a few foundation stones remain. Six byeoljang and twelve bongsugun (beacon guards) from Susanjin were stationed here, keeping watch around the clock in rotating shifts. It exchanged signals with Osopo Yeondae to the east and Ipdu Yeondae to the west.
