Dumoyeondae Pavilion
두모연대 · 頭毛煙臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA yeondae was a communication device that used torches and smoke to relay urgent political and military news. It functioned no differently from a bongsudae in purpose, except that a yeondae was generally built on a hill or by the shore, while a bongsudae was set on a mountain summit, sending signals by smoke in the daytime and by torch at night. Dumoyeondae Pavilion stands on the eastern shore of Dumo Harbour and belonged to the Myeongwol garrison. The upper part of the station was largely destroyed around 1930 when a lighthouse was built on top of it. It exchanged signals with Daepo Yeondae to the east and Udu Yeondae to the south. Six byeoljang (garrison officers) and twelve bonggun (beacon guards) were stationed here, guarding the coastline in six shifts around the clock, five days at a time each month.
