A yeondae was a means of communication that used torch fire and smoke to relay urgent political and military news. It did not differ in function from a bongsudae (beacon mound), but a yeondae was generally built on a hill or on the coast, whereas a bongsudae was built on a mountain summit, sending signals by smoke during the day and by torch fire at night. This yeondae stands in a field to the north of Seongsan Suisan High School in what was then Namjeju-gun, and it is now considerably damaged. Belonging to Susanjin garrison, it was manned by six byeoljang (detached officers) and twelve bonggun (beacon guards) from Susanjin, who kept watch here in rotation. To the east it was linked, via Seongsan Bongsudae, to Hyeopja-yeondae, and to the west to Jongdal-yeondae.
