Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site relates to Chusa Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856), a scholar of the late Joseon period, and comprises Chusa House and its surrounding area. Here stands Chusa's old family home, along with the joint tomb of Princess Hwasun and her husband Kim Han-sin, and nearby a gate of honour for a virtuous woman granted by King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800), a white pine (Natural Monument No. 106), and Kim Jeong-hui's own tomb. Kim Jeong-hui was a disciple of Bak Je-ga, of the Bukhak (Northern Learning) school, and, influenced by the evidential scholarship (gojeunghak) of Qing China, pursued learning grounded in the principle of seeking truth from facts. At the age of twenty-four he accompanied his father to Qing China, where he studied evidential scholarship, epigraphy and calligraphic styles. In 1816, the sixteenth year of King Sunjo, he examined and identified the stele commemorating King Jinheung's border-inspection tour on Bukhansan Mountain. In 1840, the sixth year of King Heonjong, he was implicated in the Yun Sang-do treason case and spent nine years in exile on Jeju Island, during which he perfected the Chusache, the distinctive calligraphic style he had long been developing. After returning from exile, he spent his remaining years absorbed in scholarship and art at Gwacheon, where his father's tomb lay, until his death.
