This was a ferry crossing connecting Gapgot-ri in Ganghwa-eup with Wolgot-myeon in Gimpo-gun. The place name Gapgot is said to derive from the time of King Gojong of Goryeo: when the Mongols invaded and the king moved the capital to Ganghwado Island, the crossing to the far bank was so short and the water so shallow here that soldiers were able to take off their armour (gapot), pile it up, and wade across. This was the ferry landing King Injo crossed during the Jeongmyo War (1627), and it was also the place where Grand Prince Bongnim attended the king during the Byeongja War (1636); during the French campaign of 1866 it was the scene of fierce fighting with French forces. At first the crossing had no landing facilities, but in 1419, the first year of King Sejong of Joseon, a man named Bak Sin financed and built a stone-paved road at his own expense over fourteen years, and it remained in use for about 500 years thereafter. The crossing was later closed around 1920 owing to changes in transportation, and was completely closed when Ganghwa Bridge opened in 1970.
