Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis church was built to a plan drawn up by Father Gu (Rev. Thomas Quinlan), who was appointed in 1937 as the fourth parish priest of Gwangju Cathedral, the year in which the Catholic community of Jeollanam-do was raised to the Diocese of Gwangju. To build the new church, Father Quinlan entrusted the design and construction to a Chinese builder, Ga Yosep, who had extensive experience in church architecture; construction began in October 1937 and the building was completed in June of the following year. The building's plan is a long, narrow rectangle, with a bell tower placed at the front and a sacristy and confessional set only on the left side. The outer walls are of red brick laid above a foundation course of stone, and granite lintels were installed over the window frames and doors of the bell tower and side walls. The interior walls and ceiling are finished plainly in white plaster, without particular decoration. Part of the building was extended in July 1987, and the window frames and roof have recently been repaired with replacement materials.
