Jeon Deuk-u Tomb
전득우묘 · 田得雨墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of General Jeon Deuk-u, who held the post of buyun (a provincial governor-general, junior second rank) in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. In 1427, the ninth year of King Sejong, his son, then serving as jejo (a supervisory official) of the Uigeumbu (the Royal Investigation Bureau), rendered great service to the state and was made a wonjong-gongsin, a meritorious subject of secondary rank; his father was in turn granted the rank of Gaseondaebu and the post of Hanseo-buyun, and the king himself bestowed a memorial stone for the tomb. The lower part of the burial mound is faced with squared granite blocks, and a low two-tiered stone wall encircles the mound. The memorial stone standing in front records that the grave was originally that of his wife, and that Jeon Deuk-u, who died later, was subsequently buried alongside her. Because this memorial stone was a gift from the king, it represents a rare example of junyejang, a formal state burial rite granted to meritorious officials, and its rarity gives the tomb great heritage value. On either side of the mound stand stone civil figures (munin-seok) carved with an almost feminine appearance, and below the tomb lies the grave of his son, Jeon Heung.
